Ensuring Critical Research Continues for Generations to Come

Dr. Barbara Leibowitz is proud of what the Weizmann Institute of Science has and will continue to achieve. “We should all be impressed and proud” she says, “as the Institute leads the scientific world in so many areas while representing Israel..”

Barbara learned about Israel and Zionism from her parents. Her father, Alex Leibowitz went to Palestine in 1930. Later he helped found AMPAL (American-Palestine Investment Co) which was to be the first venture fund in the young state and the leader in developing its manufacturing and technological growth.

Barbara’s first contact with Weizmann was in 1961 when as a biochemistry major at Cornell University she wrote a letter asking for a summer lab job. Coming from a Zionist family she wished to take the very first opportunity to get to Israel. Luckily, the letter caught the interest of Martha Lowenstein (secretary to Meyer Weisgal, Founder and Chairman). Since there was no summer program at that time Martha forwarded the letter to a professor at Hadassah Jerusalem. That summer was a dream come true and she maintained a friendship with Ms. Lowenstein until she retired from the Institute.

Some years after she left her position at Rockefeller University, she was thrilled when Rockefeller and Weizmann formed a scientific liaison. The visits and interactions with Weizmann were fulfilled when as Director of Licensing and Development at Pfizer Inc. she worked closely with several Weizmann professors who were on the leading edge of breakthroughs in science and technology.

For years, Barbara’s love of Israel and her commitment to see Israel flourish has led her, her mom and brother to support the Institute through planned gifts designed to secure the future of the Institute.**   Additionally, when Sandra informed her of the new Secure Act 2.0  she embraced the opportunity.

Barbara says “Weizmann is here to stay, and it is growing stronger. I am very proud of it.”

Barbara is passionate about the impact Weizmann makes on the world, and she wants to benefit the Institute in the long term. To learn more about how you, too, can support science for the future of humanity, contact Sandra Mizrahi at 212.895.7941 or legacy@acwis.org.

**One form of planned gift for citizens of the United States is the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) which provides lifetime income and distributes the principal of the gift to the Institute as part of the estate of the grantor.
